I have always loved a great t-shirt. I have been known to stock up on my favorite t-shirt; buying two of each style (long and short sleeved) in three or four colors (black, white, grey) at the beginning of each season. Truly, this classic has been a go-to item for me for many years and then this business started to change. This classic has become such a commodity, which caused a lack in quality. The silhouettes didn’t keep their shape and I found myself recycling them quicker than ever. I wanted something that was luxurious but easy; clean and feminine. When I couldn’t find it, I started to draw.
The reason for a classic long sleeve tee is simple. While working in the corporate world I would have numerous meetings with clients that would require me to “dress the part”. I would wear a blazer or cardigan over a black t-shirt so I had the option of taking them off when meetings got long and intense. Sadly, for mainstream retailers, t-shirts were not the focus, just something they had to carry. These t-shirts just didn’t hold up to numerous washings. They stretched out, lost their shape and many were see through. Honestly, I never really understood the “tissue” t-shirt. It was time for me to design my own version.
I had some definite requirements for a long sleeve t-shirt. The first was the silhouette. This was a garment I wanted to wear to corporate meetings, with clients and at evening events. It had to be body-hugging and keep its shape. Being conscious of sustainability was also important to me. It had to be soft, luxurious and well made. This was not going to be an item I would wear one or two times and toss it aside. This classic scoop neck t-shirt had to be such superior quality that I would have it more than one season.
With all promising ideas come revisions. The first version of my essential t-shirt came with tons of missteps. A partner that didn’t want me to visit their offices, the first batch of tee’s shrunk in the box (yes, they actually shrunk) and the fit was just a bit off. Happily, I found a more experienced production partner in NYC and she is amazing. We have been along this journey hand in hand. Julie understands my vision, has interpreted my designs perfectly and watches over production, which happens in NYC, (when I can’t be there) as if these designs were hers. We are truly invested in the success of rose& thread to women-owned companies and partners!)
An award-winning garment! It was in July, as we were moving the store when we received this invitation to a party hosted by RI Monthly. It wasn’t until we arrived at the annual gala (that everyone raves about) that we discovered we were voted Editor’s Pick for “Best Designer T-shirt” by RI Monthly. My partner Melissa will tell you, I had tears in my eyes and was speechless for at least three or four minutes (amazing for me, as I am always talking). It was so wonderful to hear that someone else loved our long sleeve tee as much as we do.
